Chapelle des Francs

Bourgeois - La Salle

21, rue Saint-Antoine, 75004 Paris
D2 This is a small serial Cavaillé-Coll (built around 1887) which was located in the mansion of Gigout at 63 bis rue Jouffroy (XVII Arr). The organ was equipped with a hand-held wind supply that his students operated themselves during classes. Gigout being then very friendly of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, he obtained the instrument at a very low price. Gigout sold his organ in 1900 to the School of the Franks- Bourgeois. It was inaugurated by Louis Vierne that same year. Beuchet re-harmonized it in 1950 and added a Plein Jeu to the Swell and a Soubasse to the pedal (from Bourdon 16 of the GO). Theorgan was tranferred to the new chapel in 1976 by Beuchet (omn the ground) and the maintenance was done by Barberis. The organ has lost his case. The lycée des Francs-Bourgeois consists of a school, a college, and a lycée, housed in the Hôtel de Mayenne. The construction of the Hôtel de Mayenne is attributed to Jacques II Androuet de Cerceau. The Renaissance style hotel at the back of the courtyard dates from the years 1570-1580 while the pavilions on the street were added later in 1611. This hotel is one of the few brick and stone hotels built in the Marais. The house was built in the years 1570-1580 on behalf of Charles de Lorraine (1554-1611), Duke of Mayenne. Transformed into a pension, the hotel has housed the private school of the Francs Bourgeois since 1870. Photos de l’orgue : Sabine Lissillour
